Why are my diabetic senior dog's Cushing's tests inconclusive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 21.5 lbs

My 11 1/2 year old mini Schnauzer is suspect to Cushing. We have had blood tests and 2 ultrasounds with both inconclusive. He is a diabetic male on 14.5 units of insulin. Why are these expensive tests inconclusive? Thank you. Rob Hawkins Florida

Unfortunately, that's just the nature of some diagnostic tests - they don't always give a clear answer, just like in humans. So repeated testing over the course of a few months, or retesting with a different type of test, may be needed to get a diagnosis. Cushing's disease is notoriously hard to diagonse in many dogs, because the testing is often borderline or inconclusive.
