My Sun conure plays, won't eat. How to give meds without fear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male

Why does my Sun conure (who is still on a formulated diet) want to play (eg. Play with its toys, climbing on me, etc.) instead of eating? Should I be worried? He seems like his typical self but I'm still scared. It also looks like he doesn't like his medication that the vet perscribed him to take, which I make him drink using a syringe. I think it traumatized him or something. Please give me suggestions on how to handle this. Thank you!

Birds are like kids and if the toy is more exciting, Skittles may want to spend time playing. Having an area where you feed and medicate him may help with any fear, and giving a favorite special treat after medication may help make the experience more positive for him. If he likes to explore toys, toys that give treats can be filled with his regular food and may encourage him to eat more while still getting to enjoy playing.
