My dog had a bat in her mouth. Should I worry about rabies infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 67 lbs

My dog had a bat in her mouth. Bat was still moving when my dog dropped it. I did not see any blood or puncture wounds on the bat or my dog. I got my dog a rabies vaccine and have been monitoring her. Bat is getting tested for rabies. What is the chance my dog contracted rabies? Will the rabies vaccine be enough to combat any infection? Do I need to be worried?

That is a bit scary for you, I imagine. The chance that this bat has rabies depends on the prevalence of rabies in your area. I suspect that if you saw no blood or puncture wounds, Riley should be fine. I don't think there is a high chance, but please keep in mind I can't say for certain. I can say getting her vaccine again was good.
