Dog's nose dry and marked after skunk spray. Is it a bite or reaction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 110 lbs

Hi, our German shepherd was sprayed in the face by a skunk what would not be 5 days ago. A few days after, we noticed a crescent shaped mark on her nose accompanied with a dry and chapped nose. I had not noticed the mark before so it is hard to say if it was there before or not. It is facing downward so the skunk would almost had to have been on top of her biting her from behind. Which seems unlikely to me but I will attach the photos from a few days ago and the one from today.

Hello. This does not look like a bite, but more likely either a skin reaction from the skunk spray, or Sawyer abraded the top of his nose trying to rub his face right after he was sprayed. Rubbing in a little triple antibiotic would not hurt, but the skin may just need a little time to heal. If the area does not seem to be healing over the next few days or so, please see your veterinarian to make sure there is no deep seated infection trying to develop.
