My dog has bad breath & losing weight. Is his homemade diet to blame?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

Hey there, we have been feeding my mixed dog rice, ground hamburger, peas, carrots and dog food for about 6 months now and he seemed fine up to now. He has some horrid breath and seems to be losing weight... could it be the food. No bones, ribs or spine are showing.

This is not a balanced diet. There are minimal minerals and vitamins (especially Calcium and Phosphorus) and over time, this can affect the body. I don't recommend to make pet food at home unless you have a consultation with a veterinary nutritionist. This is the only way to make a nutritionally balanced diet. When the recipes found on line were tested, 97% were found to be unbalanced. Weight loss is always worrisome because it can indicate anything from worms to cancer. I recommend to have Barney examined by the veterinarian. He will need his stool tested and blood work. I also recommend to begin feeding him a balanced dog food asap. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
