Should I adopt a puppy that survived parvo? What are the risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I’m supposed to be getting a puppy but just found out the pups have parvo. They are getting better but should I be worried? I’m scared he will have long term effects? Is it ok to bring him around other pups and dogs when he gets over the virus? Also does he still get shot for parvo if he’s had it and survived it? I’ve seen different posts saying after two weeks he won’t shed the parvovirus. Just worried thanks

I really think you should not get this puppy. Any "breeder" that has parvo is not a good breeder. If all their animals were vaccinated properly this would not happen. Please get a puppy somewhere else. Animals that have had parvo DO NOT get lifetime immunity so yes, they must be vaccinated or they could get it again. Usually they will continue to shed the parvovirus for up to two weeks after complete resolution of clinical signs but that is not 100%. Some will shed a shorter amount of time and some will shed for longer periods of time; this puts other animals at risk. If you get this puppy I would not take him/her around any other puppies or dogs until he/she is fully vaccinated at 4 months of age.
