My dog has a large bump in his ear. What is it and what should I do?

Thank you for the picture and clarification. This looks like it could be an aural hematoma, which is when fluid gets trapped between the layers of the ear. This is usually a sign of an ear infection. I'd have this checked out by a vet.

    It could be an aural haematoma. If this is the case, the blister will contain blood and it is likely secondary to shaking his head or/and scratching of the ear. I would recommend to have him checked over by your vet, he might have an ear infection that requires treatment.

Thanks for posting a great picture! This is a skin growth/tumor. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing what exactly the skin bump is just from looking at it (even in person). Growths like that can be several things including some benign (non cancerous) growths such as histiocytomas. Histiocytomas often develop on young dogs like Smokey and often are on the ear (or other extremities) and actually can resolve on their own over several weeks. But, other growths that are more concerning can look very similar. Ideally I would recommend having your veterinarian examine the bump. They may use a needle to aspirate (get cells) from the bump and look under the microscope to determine what type of growth this is and whether it is at all concerning or needs to be removed.

My dog has a bump on his ear that feels like a blister under his skin. There is no marks on it. It's getting bigger. What could it be. It feels like air in the bump.
If it’s inside of the ear flap then it’s most likely an aural hematoma. That is from scratching or shaking the head and a blood vessel in the ear flap ruptures and the blood is trapped between the skin layers. This can be a result of allergies or a skin infection. Having your veterinarian drain the fluid and check for infection or allergies is recommended. If you leave it alone it will takes months to resolve and the ear will become scarred and abnormal. What’s this bump inside of my dogs ear?
A bump like this could be an insect bite, a small cyst or other benign skin growth, or potentially a skin tumor. If it has been present for more than a few days or seems to be growing I'd recommend having your vet take a look in person. It almost looks like there is hair coming out of the center - if that is the case it would be more suggestive of a benign skin growth or cyst.

He’s got a bump that’s squishy and it’s purple what can it be? He itches it all the time
I don’t see a distinct bump in your picture although I do see some purple at the outer edge of the ear. I’m wondering if Kujoe might have an aural hematoma, or a blood clot in the ear. I’d recommend having your vet examine him in person to determine what this might be.

This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

My ten year old Retriever has got a lump on his left ear and its very swollen. He isn't bothered about it but I was wondering if he could have been bitten by a bug ??. We are planning on taking him to the vet later
This lump could be due to a aural hematoma, an accumulation of fluid/blood in between the cartilage of the ear and the skin, or due to a proper solid lump/growth. In this latter case this lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. My dog has a bump on his ear and I need help determining if it’s something that will go away or needs an attention of our vet.
That does look to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells and can be benign (inflammation, cyst, some tumors) or a malignant tumor. Given the age of your dog this may be a histiocytoma, but as many skin tumors can look alike the best plan to confirm this is for your vet to perform a needle aspirate for cytology. That way you will know for sure if this can be monitored or if it needs any therapy. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

What is on my dogs ear? He had a lump like this a week ago and it went away in 24 hours and a new one just appeared.
It looks like it could be a tick but I really cannot tell with 100% certainty just by looking at the photo. I suggest you take him to your vet for them to check. If it's not a tick then they can tell you what it is - could be a tumor or a cyst as well.

Your dog could have an ear infection and the bubble could be an aural hematoma, which is an accumulation of blood and fluid between the skin and the cartilage on the ear. It could also be simply an area of swelling where your dog has been scratching. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian as soon as you can to have him examined. I would not recommend using the ointment pictured near the ear - it could cause damage if it gets in the ear canal.
