Why is my dog coughing in sleep? Heart failure, infection, or reflux?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

Is my dog coughing in her sleep a sign of heart failure? She doesn’t cough all the time and maybe a few time throughout the night and it stops as soon as she hears you. Could it be a respiratory infection? She has a grade 2 heart murmur

Hello. A cough can originate from cardiac or pulmonary causes, & this can be further defined as infectious, inflammatory, allergic, bronchial or tracheal, so all coughs are not due to heart failure. The cough could also be related to some acid reflux, The only way to narrow things down is with a good physical examination & chest x-rays. Regardless of the cause of the cough, there are many, many things that can be done to alleviate the cough depending on the cause & make sure Flojo & everyone else gets a good nights sleep.
