Did eating spoiled eggs cause my dog's death from heart fluid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 70 lbs

My dog passed away yesterday from build up of fluid in the sac around his heart. He went blind and his limbs went cold. After he was unaware of his senses he was suffering so we put him down. A day or two before that he got into the trash and ate spoiled scrambled eggs. I just need to know if that’s what killed my dog. Thank you

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Duke. First off, I'm so sorry you lost him suddenly. Please accept my condolences for your loss. If he had a build up of fluid around his heart, I suspect he may have heart disease or even a tumor around the heart. Unfortunately heart disease and cancer are common in older dogs. Eating spoiled scrambled eggs would cause GI upset, like vomiting, diarrhea, and blood in the poop, not fluid around the heart. Eating those did not kill him. I hope this helps, and again, I'm sorry.
