Bird scaly face mites: How to treat? Are they contagious or on cage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old

I am researching scaly face mites to find out how to correctly treat my bird but they all seem to have different opinions do I need a straight answer to some of my questions. 1. How contagious Is it? I am treating all my birds but only one has symptoms so far. 2. Some websites so that the mites can hide in wooden perches or live on the cage and other say they only live on the bird. Which is correct and how should I treat the cage of they do live there? 3. Is this a good treatment to use?

Thanks for reaching out about Quiz and including photos. The mites live only on the birds, which is not to say they can't fall off, but typically treating all the animals in the habitat is sufficient to cure. The best treatment is a systemic medication called ivermectin but the benzoate works well. But this is not a systemic drug, therefore if an area is missed topically might not clear the infestation or take longer. Be careful applying around the eyes. Good luck.
