How to prevent bloat and joint issues for my deep-chested dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 7 months and 13 days old | 56.2 lbs

Is there ways I can reduce risk of joint issues and of bloat? She’s a deep chested dog so bloat is a concern and with her breed mixes so is joint issues. With her being a future service dog it’s important that she is always as healthy as possible. Thank you.

You can have a preventative surgery called a gatropexy to prevent against bloat. This sutures the wall of the stomach to the wall of the thorax to prevent it from twisting. Don't use an elevated bowl to feed Mazikeen. Do not exercise until an hour after eating, and do not feed her for an hour after exercising. Feed her at least twice a day. As for joints, when she is a year old, you can start giving her supplement like Dausquin or Cosequin.
