My cat's anal gland ruptured. What safe home remedies can I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 years and 9 months old

My cat got an anal sac abscess which ruptured. I was able to spray it out pretty well with Bactine spray for the time being. I called every vet in the area and no one has availability for at least a week and I don't have the funds to go to an emergency vet. I have a sterile syringe that I plan to use to flush with chlorhexidine and/or povidone–iodine. Which would be better (or both)? Since I obviously can't get Panalog, would a triple-antibiotic be effective to apply into it afterward?

Hello. I would use the povidone-iodine, as the chlorhex. may make Bob sick if he ingests it. Dilute the iodine about 50:50 with water & flush things as best you can twice a day. Applying a triple antibiotic would be fine, & make sure you put some sort of Elizabethan collar on him to prevent excessive licking. Keep the first appointment you can get just to make sure all of the infection has been cleared. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Once the gland has ruptured, much of the pain is diminished, but we routinely use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pain medications in these cases. Neither of these can be found OTC. If you can’t see a vet, the best you can do is keep it clean with running water and have Emmit wear an e-collar to prevent licking.
