My hamster has a warm lump. Is it an abscess? Can I treat it at home?

I think my hamster may have an abscess because there’s this small lump on his side that is slightly warm to the touch and the skin underneath the fur is red. (I couldn’t get a picture because he wasnt cooperating). He’s still very active and everything else seems fine. Will this heal on its own? If not, is there a way to treat it without going to the vet?

If Hannibal has an abscess, this is actually painful and can make him quite sick. Hamsters are good at hiding illnesses and pain because they are prey animals, so he may be feeling pretty badly without seeing obvious signs. The best thing for him is to have him seen by a vet in the morning. An abscess has to be treated by a vet.

If you are suspecting the presence of an abscess the best thing to do is to take him to your local veterinarian as these abscesses may need to be incised and cleaned surgically. It is unlikely to heal on its own, but rather deteriorate and possibly spread.
