My senior cat is sick, not eating. Should I put him down or investigate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 15 years and 4 months old | 9 lbs

I have a 16 year old in- and outdoor cat (mostly outdoor). He has not been eating so well during the summertime but I thought that the heat (mostly 90 plus degrees) affected him. Since 2 weeks he has not been eating much anymore, just little bit of wet food. He lost a pound already and I can tell he is not well. My vet thinks that he has a serious illness but does not know what he has (liver and kidney are fine). He is suffering and I don't know if I should put him down or investigate more.

What is your feeling on it? Do you think it's worth investigating further? Sixteen is quite an old age for a cat, and chances are that anything found will not be treatable. I would discuss his quality of life with Larry's vet to help make a decision.
