How to make safe, nutritionally balanced homemade food for my dog with cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I would really like to start making my own dog food. All the fillers and preservatives don't make me comfortable now that I've had yet another dog diagnosed with cancer. However, I want to do it right. I can't find enough information about their nutritional requirements to do this and I don't want to guess. Where can I find this information or are there other options around the unknown ingredients in my dogs' food? Thank you in advance

I'm sorry to hear you pet has cancer. Making pet food is complicated and your best option is to work with a veterinary nutritionist. Many nutritionist offer online or phone consultations. Especially with the diagnosis of cancer, there are certain nutritional considerations now that are different from a dog without cancer. The nutritionist will formulate a diet to fit the exact needs of your pup. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'm so sorry that Mary has cancer! It's hard to get a balanced diet at home which is important for her to have because she is sick, but I will give you two websites that provide recipes for homemade meals that are balanced nutritionally: https://secure.balanceit.com https://www.petdiets.com
