My green anole keeps opening her mouth. Is this normal or a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Anole | Female | unspayed

We have a small female green anole. She is about three years old. We found her outside about a year ago. She has been eating and pooping normally ever since. But lately she has been opening her mouth for about two to six seconds at a time. We have never seen her do this, and we don't know what's going on. Please let me know what is going on with her thank you

She may be "gaping". This behavior is typically in response to stress or a threat. Monitor for lethargy, wheezing or a clicking/popping sound whilenbreatuing. These symptoms, along with the gaping, may indicate a developing respiratory infection. You would need to have her physically examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles for confirmation and treatment.
