My cat has rice-like tapeworm segments. Will albendazole work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 75 lbs

Dear doctor, I live in a hilly area in India. No vet and veterinary medicines are available here. Can I treat my cat's tapeworm by albendazole? My cat is 1 year old & recently i found rice like tapeworm segments from his body. Does albendazole kill cat's tapeworm? I will be highly thankful for your kind help.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry but albendazole does not treat tapeworms in cats. It treats some tapeworm species in humans. You need a drug called praziquantel. If you can get that one, post again so we can help you with dosing information.
