Why is my dog licking his tail raw and having smelly, soft poop?

In the evening Zach recently becomes preoccupied with the underside of his tail area. One day it had been licked almost raw when I found it. Hasn’t been as bad since then but he is persistent with it in the evening. I’ve noticed ever since I adopted him in July that he tends to have very soft, foul odor stools and flatus. I feed dry dog food from Petco stores. Infrequent people food. Play ball outside 4-5 times a day. Gets love and attention often through out the day. Thanks. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zach. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. His anal glands should be checked to see if they are full, infected or impacted. If they are, then he would be uncomfortable and would lick. His diet may be agreeing with him causing the gas. This can be discussed as well. I hope this information helps!
