Why does my cat try to get to my face when I feed her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

I have a barn cat named Cali, when I go outside to feed her she always comes running to me with her kittens and rubs on my legs. Recently when I bend over to grab her food bowl or set the food down she looks me in the eye and stands up try to get to my face. Not sure if she it trying to touch her face to mine or paw me. I stand back up before she can do either.

Hello. Having had many, many cats, I can tell you this is probably a sign of affection, or she is trying to tell you to hurry up with dinner. Either way, I would discourage this a bit by just turning your back on her when reaching for her dish. She may not mean to, but she could inadvertently scratch or snag you with a claw. But this is definitely not an aggressive thing she is doing. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
