Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 23 lbs
My dog appears to have developed a patch of hard/rough hair under his chin. This happened in recent weeks, and it looks like the skin had crusted and attached to the hair. It started with slightly rough patches, but now appears to have become harder, and almost a part of the skin. Pictures attached (initial growth, followed by current pictures). Can you advice on what this is, and how to resolve?

Oscar likely has an infection in the skin. The most common culprits for the infection are bacteria, yeast, demodex mites or ringworm (which humans can get). Sometimes pets can get a combination of these pathogens. Each one of these pathogens respond to different treatments so it is important to have Oscar examined by the veterinarian. Two easy diagnostics may be recommended: a skin smear and a skin scrap. Other diagnostics like a fungal culture or tape prep may also be advised pending physical exam and results of the first two diagnostics. Treatments may be oral medications along with topical therapy. Oscar's chin needs to be protected from rubbing (which could make it worse) and he may need to wear an elizabethan collar. Starting him on an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets may also help improve over-all skin health. I hope this helps and that he gets on the mend quickly. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
