My dog won't eat for 2 days and is lethargic. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | unneutered | 125 lbs

My dog has not eaten for about 2 days (as of today) and we’re really worried. We believe he has arthritis (our normal vet is not very helpful) but we’re not sure if that is the cause of it or if he consumed something he was not supposed to. He has absolutely no appetite and has been wanting to sleep all day and remain laying down.

This is abnormal behavior for sure. If you are worried you should have to the vet for an exam. If you don't think your vet is helpful there is no issue with you getting a second opinion elsewhere. Arthritis, even very advanced, is not likely to cause inappetence. Something else must be underlying. I would suggest a thorough vet exam, some blood testing and some x-rays.
