My puppy has persistent diarrhea but no vomiting. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 16 days old | 18 lbs

My puppy started having diarrhea on Tuesday at 5:00 pm, during his scheduled nap time. He then had diarrhea again Wednesday morning sometime before 6:00 am, when he normally wakes up. He still has diarrhea as of this morning, but it looks a little better and he had one semi-solid piece of poop. He is extra sleepy because he woke up at 4:00 am to poop. Other than his loose stools, he was acting normally yesterday. No other symptoms like vomiting. What do you think this is? Picture is from 8/16.

Since it has happened a few days in a row, I would be a little concerned. It is possible Milo got into something that caused some tummy upset and is now resolving, however other issues that require treatment such as parasites or GI illnesses can also cause prolonged diarrhea. Sudden food changes may also cause diarrhea along with too many treats. Since the diarrhea has persisted, I would at the very least bring in a sample of it to your vet for testing, and remove all extra other than his food for a few days to keep stomach upset to a minimum. If he continues to have diarrhea or becomes very lethargic, vomits, stops eating, etc, seek veterinary care for a full exam right away.
