My cat keeps scooting and licking her bum. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 11.4 lbs

My long haired cat keeps scooting her bum on our carpet and licking it constantly. It looks red too. We had her bum shaved by our vet and we wash it regularly to keep it clean. Can you suggest an OTC product or wipe I could get to relieve her itching? Thank you.

Hello, I would recommend taking Harley Quinn to the vet. There are multiple causes for this, and they have different remedies. Anal gland abscesses, internal parasites, and food allergies are a few common reasons cats may scoot and lick their rear. Your vet can guide you best after a physical exam. I hope this helps.
