My dog's chemo went outside the vein. Is this normal? What's next?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed

My dog's first chemotherapy treatment today, gave consent to use anesthesia as they stressed the importance of keeping the chemo inside her veins. I get a call back saying the chemo went outside her vein. How does this happen? They sent me home with anti vomit/diarrhea medicine but 9 hours later and no symptoms. The vet said if she becomes sick, lethargic, etc. We will need to discuss alternatives. What does that mean? If she can do another treatment should I expect this to happen every time?

This can happen, and it's ok. Without being there, I can't say exactly what happened, but it could be the vein blew and the needle slipped out. I've had needles slip out before like when taking blood or trying to put in an IV line. It does not mean it will happen each time she has a treatment. Check with her vet to see what they mean by "we will need to discuss alternative."
