My dog has an oozing lump on his back. Should I wait or go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 15 lbs

Dog had a.small pee sized lump on back in middle along spine below base of neck. Overnight it became a large golfball size lump that has a hole the size of a pencil eraser that is oozing blood and some thick gray matter. The area not hot, he does not have a fever, he is eating and drinking, and acting normal. I was able to get in at my vet at 9am tomorrow but not able to speak to a tech or a vet when this happened. Want to know if it is okay to wait till the appointment or if he needs the er

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Lockjaw. I'm wondering if that area is an abscess that has now ruptured. It doesn't look great, but if he is eating and drinking, he does not have a fever, and the area isn't hot, you can wait until tomorrow morning to have him seen by his vet. If the area becomes hot, he gets a fever, or he stops eating or drinking, have him seen by an ER vet right away. I hope this helps!
