My dog ate a cooked chicken bone. Will it dissolve or pass safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 22 lbs

My dog snuck past me and grabbed a chicken leg bone. He bit off half and I think swallowed it without chewing. It’s been almost 24 hrs but he is normal. He is eating and I’ve given him pumpkin. I have been very worried and checked his stool but do not see anything. He has passed stool twice since then. Would the piece of bone dissolve or would I be able to see it?

Hello again. As I said earlier, the bone was digested/dissolved. A single piece of cooked bone would have no problems being digested & passing normally through the GI tract. If he has been symptom free for a day, he will continue to be symptom free. If you like, you can continue the pumpkin for another day, but this is not absolutely necessary. He will be fine.
