Why does my older dog's chest shake when she's just resting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 10 years and 3 months old | 59 lbs

Hello doctor, I have noticed something new in my dog happened twice today, afternoon and now at night. While she is laying on our bed not sleeping just resting, her body shakes for just few seconds and I believe mostly the part of her chest. it freaked me out! Our room is not cold not hot just warm temperature and she is not sleeping nor dreaming while this happened. I believe this is not normal what should I do? Should specific test be done? Is it something dangerous about her health?

I have seen a lot of dogs do this without finding an underlying cause. Often we chalk it up to weakening of muscles as they age. Since she is older, this may be the cause. If you are worried you should always have a vet check her out. Taking a video of her exhibiting this behavior is recommended so your vet can see what she is doing. Just starting out with basic blood testing is where I would begin.
