Why is my dog acting so hyper after taking Benadryl for allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years old | 65 lbs

She had a swollen snout. Look like a bee sting gave her .25mg of benadryl and look like it was going down that was at about 2pm on Saturday then gave her another .25mg at 7pm and then about 9pm she started running around like a crazy dog way out of the normal so we though it was the benadryl so we though it just has to get out of her system but that lasted alright she couldn't calm down and was up all night and then the next day was still acting weird but was more calm and then lastnight same

Her behavior could be from the Benadryl but I doubt it as you gave an extremely low dose of it (I'm assuming you gave 1 tablet at 25mg - not 0.25mg). Benadryl is metabolized very quickly by dogs so they need a very high dose. The dose is 1mg per pound of body weight so she would have needed around 65 mg (so you would have to give 2 or 3 of the 25mg tablets for it to help much). You can refer to this information sheet about using Benadryl in dogs. ( https://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/drug-library/library/diphenhydramine-benadryl-for-dogs-and-cats/ ) If you are worried about her behavior you should take her to the vet for an exam.
