Can a new antler cause my dog to have loose stool with mucus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog was chewing on a new antler for a long time last night and in the middle of the night he woke up and had to poop. It was very loose and liquidy. He also pooped a loose stool today. I’m wondering if this can be caused by the antler and if so what I should do? It also did have what looked like a little mucus

Yes, it could be from the antler. I suggest you take it away from him so he can't chew it anymore. The loose stool should resolve on it's own with no treatment but if you would like to start him on a probiotic you can do that. One made for dogs, not people. You can buy them at any large petstore like Petco. The mucus is not that concerning at this stage. If the loose stool and/or mucus lasts longer than 3 days then he should see a vet.
