My arthritic senior dog stopped eating. Can I switch to frozen food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 16 years and 10 months old

Hi. My old dog has been eating Royal Canin mobility c2p as he has some arthritis. He is not a greedy dog but will almost always finish up his food. Lately he hasn't been eating well. Nibbling on his food and leaving half. I have tried him on Hills i/d for a spell and a few other brands with the same result. I put him on a store bought frozen food which he is now eating with gusto. Do you think it would be ok for me to feed him this as long as he wants it. He had a dental about 2 months ago

I would let the vet that prescribed the Royal Canin mobility know you have switched Sam's food in case they want to add any additions such as a glucosamine supplement or prescription to treat the arthritis in addition to the new food. Otherwise, if he is eating well and seems happy on the diet, it should be OK to switch as long as your vet gives the OK.
