My dog is dry heaving but healthy. When to call emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 24 days old | 35 lbs

Hi! Marla started dry heaving this morning. She has done it 3 times in the last 4hrs. Otherwise she appears completely healthy. She’s playful and high energy. She shows no signs of pain in her stomach when I press on it and she doesn’t appear to be bloated. She ate her breakfast fine. Her stool this morning appeared normal and she has had no trouble using the bathroom. Is this something I should I take her to the emergency room for or something I can wait to take her to our normal vet tomorrow?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marla. If she vomits up the breakfast she ate, becomes lethargic or develops blood in the stool or vomit, then I recommend you seek emergency veterinary care today. This is assuming that she is otherwise healthy. I hope this information helps!
