My cat's rear is swollen, licking, and losing fur. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 6.6 lbs

My cat's anus and vagina area is swelling, the fur around it is shed, and she is licking it again and again. This all happened within one day. On the other hand rest of her activities are normal like eating , drinking and playing. What can be the reason behind it? Can it be serious?

Thank you for the photo. Yes, it does look serious but I cannot give you a specific diagnosis just based on this photo and your description. She is licking back there either because something is hurting her (so she is in pain) or she has an infection of either the anal area and/or the vagina/uterus/bladder. I am glad she is otherwise acting normally but that does not mean there is no problem here. I suggest you have her to a vet for an exam.
