My parakeet has a black spot, missing nail, and isn't moving her foot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | 0.08 lbs

My parakeet has a black spot beside one of her nails. Also one of her nails is missing, and there's a black spot where the nail is supposed to grow from. She's not moving one of her feet. I think it's articular gout, but I don't know. What should I do? Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out about Violet. Black spots under the nail (sub-keratin) can often result from bleeding (hemorrhage) with the possibility of liver disease resulting in blood clotting problems. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Liver disease can be serious and manifest in other problems. Veterinary treatment early in the disease process has an improved prognosis. Causes can be bacterial, viral, dietary and other. Good luck.
