My senior budgie has a hole in his beak. Is a vet visit safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | 11 years and 9 months old

I have two budgies and the male budgie, Eric, has a little hole on the side of his beak. It doesn’t go all the way through his beak, it only goes about halfway through his beak. I noticed it yesterday when I was cleaning their cage. Since Eric is almost 11 years old, I’m wondering if it would be possible for me to bring him in to get it checked on. I don’t want him to become very stressed because he is an older bird. He isn’t used to people picking him up and holding him.

Thanks for reaching out about Eric and including photos. The beak erosions should be assessed by a veterinarian, as am concerned this could be a clinical sign of an beak infection or even liver disease. Also a little concerning is the thickening of the cere and tan/brown color. A veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
