My dog coughs, hacks, and gags after playing. What's causing it?

My chihuahua-poodle mix has always had a bad problem coughing. It happens most when he plays, after about a minute he starts hacking and gagging. It’s a very dry cough. He is not lethargic nor lost his appetite. He plays still but I can tell it bothers him. He eventually gags like he is about to puke. It bothers me greatly as I cannot find ANY answers. He has no sick symptoms at all. I will attach a photo of him with my father to show his size. (I haven’t taken him to a vet as it’s expensive). Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 11 lbs

Hi. Coughing can be caused by a lot of things. It can be allergies, irritants, infection, heart disease, tracheal collapse, valley fever, upper respiratory disease, and more.
