My dog coughs, hacks, and gags after playing. What's causing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 11 lbs

My chihuahua-poodle mix has always had a bad problem coughing. It happens most when he plays, after about a minute he starts hacking and gagging. It’s a very dry cough. He is not lethargic nor lost his appetite. He plays still but I can tell it bothers him. He eventually gags like he is about to puke. It bothers me greatly as I cannot find ANY answers. He has no sick symptoms at all. I will attach a photo of him with my father to show his size. (I haven’t taken him to a vet as it’s expensive)

Hi. Coughing can be caused by a lot of things. It can be allergies, irritants, infection, heart disease, tracheal collapse, valley fever, upper respiratory disease, and more. Olive will need an exam to start and then most likely xrays and labs. Veterinary expenses are unfortunately a part of pet ownership. If it helps you can apply for a medical credit card called care credit at carecredit.com
