My dog kills animals. Can high prey drive be corrected or managed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 68 lbs

My dog has recently killed 2 raccoons & now a cat. After killing the cat he mutilated the poor thing. Is this behavior that can be corrected or should he be put down before it gets worse? Is this behavior that can be corrected

This is not likely a behavior that can be corrected but it can be managed with a lot of consistency and persistence. Sounds like Coop has a high prey drive which is instinct. Instinct is very difficult to overcome. Your best option is to try working with an in-home, professional dog trainer. They can give you the best advice after speaking to you and assessing Coop's behavior. I personally like Bark Busters as a company and it appears that they have a trainer in your area. I suggest you give them a call. I am pretty sure they do a free consultation. ( https://www.barkbusters.com/dog-training-seattle-north )
