My dog yelps when jumping but doesn't limp. Could he be hurting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 6 lbs

Why is my dog crying? He lets out a yelp when he jumps on couches and beds even though he’s never had a problem with it before. He walks fine without limping and when I tried to examine each of his legs, he didn’t seem in pain. He is also sleeping in corners of rooms he’s never slept before when he usually likes to snuggle. When I try to go by him, his head is down as if he’s sad

He is definitely hurting somewhere or he wouldn't be yelping. Have you ever hurt your neck and it only is sore when you turn it a certain way? It's the same with dogs. When he turns/jumps a certain way he is feeling pain in some location. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. They will at the very least be able to dispense some anti-inflammatories/pain medication for Ares to make him feel better.

She may have some back pain or hind limb pain. Have her examined by your veterinarian. Xrays will likely be required. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play until she sees the vet.
