My dog's hot spot is bad and paws are swollen. Can I bandage it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Molly, my 10 yr. old pomeranian, licks and chews her paws and legs. Onee hotspot has developed on her leg she won't leave alone and paws are swollen and red between the toes. She also smells horrible. After she's bathed, should the hot spot be bandaged since she continuously licks and bites it?

Poor Molly! No, the feet should not be bandaged. bandaging will not allow air circulation which can make the infection worse. Based upon your description, this sounds like a significant infection. I recommend to have Molly examined by the veterinarian. She may have a bacterial, yeast or a mixed infection in her skin. She needs appropriate medications, an anti-inflammatory, possibly topical treatment and she needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent any licking. Sometimes these infections are the primary problem but they can be related to a a pre-existing condition. I hope this helps and that Molly starts feeling better quickly. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
