Is it okay to vaccinate my dog if he's experiencing diarrhea?

I would keep the appointment but let the vet know what's going on before they give the vaccinations. It may be that his diarrhea is just a passing symptom and not a big deal, especially if he's acting normally otherwise. If he isn't improving, getting him seen and the reason for the diarrhea checked out is a good idea.

It is not unusual for puppies to experience mild vaccine reactions, which can manifest as a small amount of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Apollo may be more lethargic/sleepy after his vaccines too. As long as he is otherwise acting normally and is not vomiting repeatedly or experiencing any other abnormal clinical signs (itchy skin, redness, etc) he will likely be OK. If you are ever concerned that he is not acting right or seems very dumpy, he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. I recommend still letting your veterinarian know that Apollo had this reaction so they are aware of it for next time. I hope this is helpful!

Good Afternoon...thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. There can be many reasons puppies can experience diarrhea parasites and dietary upset are certainly two of them! Fecal exams can be false negative on occasion - there can be multiple reasons for this. I would recommend rechecking a fresh (preferably clinically loose sample) again with your veterinarian just to be sure. Sometimes Giardia can be hard to diagnose, and the dewormer you are using (Pyrantel) is a good one, but does not get either giardia or coccidia. If the loose stool persists or progresses for more than 24 hours, you may want to bring the little one in for an exam and possibly some prescription medications. Vaccinations are very important - I would not skip that, and I would hope the diarrhea should be well cleared by then. Maybe remove the mild from the diet as well. I hope this helps, good luck!

The runny nose may be due to something like an upper respiratory infection. I recommend that you have Cooper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Yes generally speaking they are and that should not be a problem at all. As most of the times this gastrointestinal problems are dietary related, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It could be a reaction. A dog can have vaccine reactions at any point in life. Reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after vaccination. For the diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet (plain, boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If t doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian. In the future, separate the vaccines to determine which vaccine caused the reaction. Your veterinarian can pretreat with an antihistamine to avoid reactions. Call your veterinarian and report the possible reaction.

Depending on the cause of his sickness, it may not be a good idea to have him vaccinated, especially if he has a fever. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him to determine if he should be vaccinated. Your vet can also prescribe medications to help make him feel better.

Without the full history and diagnosis from your vet it is impossible for us to guess what they gave him but you should contact your vets office and inform them of his good progress and they can help as to whether he must complete a full course or if he is ok. Temporary diarrhoea is very common in new pups moving house but certain medicatons such as antibiotics if given should be completed as prescried. Vaccinations depend very much on the risk factors in your area so your local vets office would best placed to advise - most puppies require a course of 2-3vaccines coverning the diseases present in your area to reduce the risk of them contracting certain serious illnesses.

If he is active and eating great, I am not terribly concerned about it yet. Try replacing some of his puppy food with plain cooked white rice to help settle his stomach. Once the diarrhea stops, slowly replace the rice with puppy food over 2-3 days. He may need a course of medication for the diarrhea or to switch his diet to something else for a while. Your vet should be able to help you with both of these. Over the counter pro-biotics like Purina Forti-Flora can also help puppies with diarrhea. In my opinion, if Mallows is active and eating well, he should ABSOLUTLEY be vaccinated on schedule, regardless of diarrhea. Parvo virus is a deadly killer of puppies, whereas whatever Mallows has going on is obviously not seriously afffecting his health at this time. Therefore the priority is to protect against parvo and figure out the diarrhea as we can. I hop
