GSD puppy: Is paying more for OFA-tested parents worth the cost?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 80 lbs

Hello, I am considering purchasing a GSD. Trying to find a reputable breeder. I have found on-line breeders that advertise their breeding stock are O.F.A tested and rated negative for hip and elbow dysplasia and AKC registered with 1st vet check, 1st shots, and 1st round of dewormer. Their Prices around $$1500 , 2K to3K while others do not advertise anything regarding their health of their puppies. Is it worth spending $3K or would a $500 to $800 GSD is just as good?

It is best to get a dog from a breeder that has breeding stock that is OFA certified. Whether or not the vet checks, shots, dewormer are included is up to you. Any dog, but especially a GSD, with hip dysplasia is going to cost you a lot of money and the dog a lot of pain. Go with the OFA tested parents regardless of the price.
