Why are my cats fighting after she had kittens? How can I help them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old

Both my cats mella and casper have been together since they were kittens, they used to play and everything was great. My cat mella got pregnant by casper, and after giving birth to her litter everytime he tries to play with her she gets aggressive and starts hissing and making angry sounds, She only lets him groom her. This happens only when he jumps on her trying to play or whatever. We gave the kittens for adoption now and I really want them to get along again, what should I do.

I hope these two cats are not related. Breeding related cats is NOT recommended. It sounds like he is trying to get her pregnant again and she doesn't want him. You cannot force cats to get along. They may never go back to the way they were. It is best to spay Mella so that he stops trying to breed with her.
