My 17-year-old dog has a tender belly lump. Is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 17 years and 4 months old | 5 lbs

My girl is 17 and I feel horrible I'm unable to afford to take her to a vet at this time so please forgive me about this and I do love her dearly. She has a tennis ball mast on her belly she acts like she's not in constant pain but it is tender to the touch. I'm at a loss to know what to do about if it's time to put her to sleep or figure out someway to get her help. If you can please give me advice on what to do. thank you.

Hello. That is a rather large mammary tumor. At this point, it is probably inoperable. The question now is the quality of Pea's life. Does she eat & drink well? Does she go about her business every day? Does she still interact & love you? I think we all know in our hearts when it is time to let a pet go. I know it will be hard, but when the time comes, & Pea is at peace, you will know you did the right thing for her. Take care & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
