My dog had pancreatitis. Why is he still lethargic and weak?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

My 4 year old neutered miniature schnauzer recently had a severe bout with pancreatitis. This was his first time. He was treated with fluids for 3 days and sent home Tuesday afternoon with metronidazole, cerenia and famotidine. He has been drinking, eating homemade food in very small amounts, and his stool is firming up. No vomiting. He is still acting lethargic/tired/weak. Should this be expected after such a bout? Should we still be concerned with a potential blockage?

Hello, I would expect Walter to still be a bit lethargic and weak at this point. The fact that he is eating, not vomiting, then passing firmer stool is wonderful! This makes me believe he is on the right track for recovery. We worry about blockages when they are not eating, vomiting, and have diarrhea. His attitude and energy should bounce back to normal within the next week. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
