My cat had one loose, smelly stool. Is it an emergency? Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 7.94 lbs

Coco is eating well, actively plays and doing her litter activities properly but two days back, only once she did pass a loose stool and it was smelly. Next day onwards her poop is of proper consistency and smells normal. What can be the reason? Is it an emergency situation? Should I take her to vet? Coco was spayed last month. Please help.

Hello, I worry about cats having diarrhea when it lasts for more than two days, or is accompanied by a change in behavior, such as lethargy or increased hiding, or a decrease in appetite. I would not be concerned about a single incident with no other changes. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
