My dog has itchy skin and allergies. Is Allegra D safe for him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

My dog has been constantly itching. So much, that I have found tiny scabbed over patches in his armpits and throughout his body. Due to no evidence of fleas or any other disturbance, I have narrowed it down to allergies - although I am certainly not a professional, which is why I am here! I do not have any Benedryl, and so I am wondering If it would be appropriate to administer an Allegra D to relieve some of his discomfort until I can get him to the vet? He is a 15.2 lb dachshund.

No on the Allegra D. Thank you for asking first. The "D" means it contains pseudoephedrine or other decongestants that are toxic to dogs. It is best to use Benadryl, loratidine or cetirizine. I have attached a link to a chart that has dosing information on it. ( https://www.healthcareforpets.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/antihistamine-therapy-chart-for-dogs.jpg )
