Dog has itchy bumps, hair loss, swollen eye. What to do if no vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 6 days old | 30 lbs

Hi! I have a dog named Parker. He’s a Blue Nose Pitbull. Recently for the past 2 weeks, he has been developing bumpy, itchy spots all over his back. Now, they’ve spread to his tail, back legs, front legs, neck, and chest. He’s losing hair more on his tail and back legs. Today, 1 eyelid is extremely swollen and the other has a bump. The corner of his lips have red bumps as well. What should I do if my parents are unable to take him to the vet?

It is best to get him to a vet. This sounds like an allergic reaction that can progress to worse symptoms where he has trouble breathing which can be serious. In the meantime you can give him one Benadryl capsule or tablet (25mg) to see if that helps.

It is difficult to appreciate the bump under his eye here, but perhaps there is some swelling. I would be concerned about a possible allergic reaction or infection. If he is gagging and moving his head abnormally these are concerning signs and could indicate he is having trouble breathing, which can occur with allergic reactions and would be considered an emergency. I would recommend getting him to the vet as soon as possible.
