My dog is lethargic, yelping, and not playing. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 11 months old

My dog has suddenly lost energy today and he's just laying down stationary when he usually will be rolling into his back or playing with his toys. He's still eating and was snacking on his bone a little bit this morning, but it's very minimal to his usual self. He yelped a couple times when I went to pick him up but I tried to be sensitive and check if any areas were in pain. Are there any other way to tell if he is in pain or could this be something else?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rambo. His behavior suggests that he is painful. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. His breed is especially prone to neck and/or back pain. If this is the case, it requires prompt treatment. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
