My dog's recent surgery incision is discharging. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

My dog had surgery last Thursday between her shoulders to remove a growth. This is her incision site today. It appears to have started discharging which it had not been doing earlier. Does this seem normal?

Hello. Thanks for the picture. Things look pretty good. It is a little irritated at the top, but the majority of the incision looks perfect. I would just clean away any discharge with a little warm water & not fuss too much with things. Once the staples are out, everything will calm down & heal well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
