My dog has dry skin and scratches. Should I give her flaxseed oil?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Carolina Dog | Female | spayed | 4 years and 6 months old | 45 lbs

I have a Carolina Dog, about 45 pounds. She has very dry skin and scratches all the time. The steroid shot is good for about a week. I give her a 10mg Benidrill with food in the morning. No hot spots or broken skin...shedding and scratching all the time. Can I give her Flaxseed oil 1,000mg pill every day? Will this help?

Hello. You might do better to give a fish oil capsule as opposed to the flaxseed. The omega 3 & 6 in fish oil has better anti-inflammatory properties than the plant based oils. I would give Sadie Mae 1000-1200 mg fish oil twice a day. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
