What vaccines does my older indoor cat need and can I give them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

We got our cat almost a year ago but didn't get her rabies shot or the cat distemper one, at the time she was to small. What does she need now that she is older. Strictly indoor cat. And can we purchase them and give them to her?

I would recommend a feline upper respiratory vaccine (FVRCP) and a rabies vaccine. If she has any outdoor exposure, I would also consider the Feline Leukemia vaccine (FeLV). You may be able to purchase the FVRCP and FeLV from a feed store but you will need a licensed veterinarian to give the Rabies.

For a strictly indoor cat (doesn't go outside AT ALL or escape the house on occasion and doesn't come into contact with any other cats that are outdoors) we normally recommend a rabies vaccine and the Feline Distemper combination vaccination (often called FVRCP or DRCP) http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A
